FAQ
Why should I perform wildfire mitigation in Idaho? Wildfire mitigation is essential in wildland urban interfaces (WUI). Idaho is a dry climate during the summer months and actions should be taken to better the safety of our growing developments in these mountain town areas. Proactive steps like creating defensible space, reducing excess vegetation, and using fire-resistant building practices help protect lives, property, air quality, watersheds, and wildlife. Mitigation efforts improve community resiliency and can drastically reduce the intensity of a wildfire when they occur.
How can I prepare my home ready for the wildfire season? There are several simple steps homeowners can take to get ready for wildfire season. It’s important to regularly clear debris from your roof and gutters, and to remove any leaf buildup from the Immediate Zone (within 5 feet of your home). You should also make a point to move combustible items—like patio furniture, and vehicles—at least 30 feet away from your home during Red Flag warnings if you’ll be away for an extended time. It’s also a good habit to walk around your property often to check that building materials are in good shape, there are no gaps in the structure, and no dead or overgrown vegetation is close to your home.
What does a wildfire risk assessment look like? A Wildfire Mitigation Specialist will come out to your property and assess both your home and surrounding landscape. They’ll look at things like your home’s structure, nearby vegetation and fuel levels, defensible space, access to the property, and any other factors that could increase wildfire risk. NFPA brochures and booklets will be handed out as well, giving you hands on information on immediate zones and preparing your home for a wildfire.
How often should I mitigate my property? Wildfire mitigation isn’t something you do just once—it’s an ongoing effort. As vegetation grows back and conditions change, it’s important to keep up with regular maintenance and reassess your property to maintain defensible space. From our experience, this is typically done about twice a year here in Idaho.
Will wildfire mitigation services help with my homeowner's insurance in Idaho? In short, yes. A detailed mitigation plan, proper documentation, and thorough mitigation work can often help meet insurance requirements, support compliance, and potentially improve insurability by demonstrating reduced risk. While it doesn’t guarantee full relief from insurance liability, it can significantly lower a home’s vulnerability.
How much does wildfire mitigation cost in Idaho? Wildfire mitigation costs can vary quite a bit depending on factors like vegetation type, terrain, property size, accessibility, and the specific work needed. Most of our projects typically fall in the range of about $3,000 to $20,000.
